Another great question submitted to Dr. Beth to answer. Read below:

Question:

My gf had the implant inserted on 4/20 we had unprotected sex 4/27 is the implant effective against pregnancy?

Answer:

Thanks for your question-

The informational insert for Implanon (I am assuming that is the implant that was used) suggests alternative birth control methods for the first 7 days.  I suspect you are safe, but have a low threshold for getting tested if she has symptoms of pregnancy.

And remember, the implant is only effective for pregnancy and does not protect you from gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, HIV etc.  If you are not using condoms, it would be a great idea for you both to get screened for any STDs and then be monogamous!

Stay safe,
Dr. Beth
